The Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) exam was designed by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) to measure specific technical skills and proficiencies for hemodialysis technologists and technicians.

Certified Hemodialysis Technician Exam Eligibility

To be eligible for the exam, you must have at least 6 months of nephrology patient care experience, and you must currently be active in an ESRD facility. If you are lacking experience in patient care, you can apply to take the exam within 2 years of completing a BONENT-approved educational program.

Certified Hemodialysis Technician Exam Outline

The CHT exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 3 hours.

The exam is split into five content domains.

I. Patient Care (45%)

The questions in this domain assess your ability to do the following:

  • Evaluate fluid management
  • Collect and evaluate patient data
  • Document assessment
  • Evaluate, intervene, and manage treatment

II. Machine Technology (12%)

The questions in this domain assess your ability to do the following:

  • Set up the dialysis machine
  • Maintain the dialysis machine
  • Recognize errors in blood and dialysate flow rates
  • Evaluate machine operation
  • Adhere to equipment and maintenance procedures and schedules

III. Water Treatment (15%)

The questions in this domain assess your ability to do the following:

  • Understand system design and components
  • Maintain systems
  • Perform water treatment system checks
  • Monitor and evaluate systems
  • Monitor total chlorine/chloramines

IV. Infection Control (18%)

The questions in this domain assess your ability to do the following:

  • Maintain a clean and safe patient environment
  • Use dialysis precautions
  • Implement isolation procedures

V. Education and Professional Development (10%)

The questions in this domain assess your ability to do the following:

  • Educate the patient
  • Engage in professional development
  • Understand quality-related issues
  • Demonstrate communication skills with staff members

Certified Hemodialysis Technician Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must first submit an application to BONENT. Your application must include all necessary documentation to prove your eligibility, as well as the full examination fee. The fee for the paper-and-pencil exam is $225, while the fee for the computer-based test is $250.

Once your application and payment are received and approved, you will receive confirmation and details regarding how to schedule your examination appointment.

Test Day

On the day of the exam, you must arrive at the testing center 15-30 minutes early to allow time for the check-in process. This process involves showing the testing center representative your confirmation notice and one form of valid photo ID.

No calculators, electronic devices, or personal items are allowed in the testing center, so you will be asked to store such items in your car or a secured locker outside the testing room. A pencil will be provided for you before you enter the testing room.

Once the check-in process is complete, you will be led to the testing room and given a short introduction to the testing system before starting your exam.

How the CHT Exam is Scored

The CHT exam is scored using a scaled scoring system. This system takes your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 1 to 100. To pass, you must achieve a scaled score of at least 70.

You will receive an official score report before you leave the testing center.

Retaking the Certified Hemodialysis Technician Exam

If you fail the exam, you may apply to retake it. You will need to submit your application and full examination fee again for each retake.

If you have not passed the exam after 3 attempts, you must complete at least 8 hours of nephrology-related continuing education to be eligible for another attempt.
